420: Backwoods Edition - Where The Unknwns Find Their Freedom

420: BACKWOODS EDITION, 2024
Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop

Much like smoke weaving its way unpredictably through the air, 420: Backwoods Edition by South Africa’s underground collective, The Unknwns, takes listeners on a winding journey through an eclectic blend of ideas, emotions, and sonic landscapes. Dropped on April 20th, 2024, the mixtape confidently cements its place in the alternative hip-hop realm with its daringly unconventional style and hallucinatory soundscapes. Yet, despite its ability to mesmerize and elevate the senses, it feels somewhat detached from the core identity of a traditional 4/20 project.

At its heart, the mixtape stands as a bold declaration of independence—a defiant rejection of conformity that celebrates individuality and mental fortitude. The Unknwns’ talent for crafting ethereal, otherworldly soundscapes takes center stage, with surreal skits and samples—from Jerry Springer’s reflections on everyday life to scenes from the cannabis cult classic How High—infusing the project with a cinematic flair. These elements create an immersive listening experience, drawing audiences into an alternate reality that perfectly complements an elevated state of mind. However, the album's thematic looseness—a swirling mix of self-worth, countercultural ideals, and introspective musings—feels more like a cosmic collage than a unified narrative.

With a refined lineup of five vocalists—Soul Rich, Kenn Kyoto, Laezy.I, Scxtt Supremacy, and the standout Daddy Indica—and five producers (TELO5, Crystate, Raven Santana, Bob Wires, and KNOW), the mixtape achieves a newfound clarity. Daddy Indica’s soulful harmonies and ethereal melodies provide a layer of sophistication, her contributions serving as a cornerstone of emotional depth throughout the project. Conversely, Soul Rich shifts towards a more rap-focused delivery, stepping away from his trademark minimalist singing—a choice that, while showcasing his versatility, might leave fans longing more of that soothing, melodic touch that has defined much of his previous work.

Standout tracks like "SUPER MARIO" and "THAILAND" showcase Laezy.I's consistent ability to command attention, repeatedly stealing the spotlight with his sharp delivery. Meanwhile, "MOESHA'S DIARY ENTRY," a masterfully reimagined remix, weaves complex tales of love, insecurity, and empowerment, highlighting the group’s remarkable storytelling prowess. On "CELLULAR GLITCH," the chemistry between Soul and Kenn Kyoto is undeniable, creating a synergy that begs to be explored further in future projects. Adding to the mix, Scxtt Supremacy’s bold delivery and unapologetic flair leave a lasting impression, cementing his place as a standout voice in the collective.

Clocking in at just 32 minutes across 13 tracks, 420: Backwoods Edition keeps its runtime tight, leaving listeners immersed in a fog of introspection and euphoria. While it may stray from the essence of a classic 4/20-themed project, its bold creativity and ambition firmly cement The Unknwns’ standing in the underground alternative scene. This mixtape marches to the beat of its own drum—an unpredictable yet captivating journey that’s well worth experiencing.

Starting his journey at just 13, Mekoa, the creative force behind the alias, reveals a refined grasp of sound design and arrangement on this project. It’s a striking showcase of his rapid growth and distinct musical vision.

Inspired by innovators like Korey Wade and BOYDEGA, OH FLiP TOO finds THE iLLUSTRATXR redefining the boundaries of the flip genre. The project is a mesmerizing fusion of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music, showcasing Mekoa's exceptional production skills. With intricate sample chops, rich textures, and irresistible rhythms, the tape is a testament to his artistry and creative vision.

What makes OH FLiP TOO truly stand out is its seamless balance between honoring the original material and reinventing it with a modern twist. Mekoa’s sharp melodic sense and talent for creating unforgettable hooks elevate these flips into fully realized tracks, far surpassing the realm of simple remixes.

Although the production on OH FLiP TOO is undeniably outstanding, it’s the emotional depth and artistic vision that set it apart. Drawing inspiration from legends like J. Dilla and HHP, Mekoa infuses the project with soulful undertones while fearlessly pushing the boundaries of hip-hop and R&B.

From the very first note, OH FLiP TOO feels like a heartfelt message directly to the listener’s soul. The meticulously chosen samples and intricate arrangements stir a wide range of emotions, shifting from deep introspection to pure exhilaration. Each track unfolds like a brushstroke on an expansive canvas, telling a story of ambition, self-discovery, and creative fulfillment. With its neo-soul and R&B influences, the mixtape blends a laid-back yet emotionally charged atmosphere, offering both a reflective and exhilarating listening experience.

Thematically, the project stands out for its cohesive narrative, with each track contributing to a larger story. The sequencing unfolds a loose but meaningful arc that journeys through ambition, self-discovery, love, and ultimate creative fulfillment. This deliberate structure highlights THE iLLUSTRATXR's artistry and his ability to craft a project that resonates both emotionally and sonically.

"Growth", "Blood In, Blood Out" and "What's Next" lay a foundation of loyalty and ambition, showing a protagonist navigating the pressures of success. Sets the tone for themes of trust and resilience, feels like a transition into the protagonist assessing their next move after establishing a foundation of loyalty and ambition.

Tracks like "Same Mistake," "Show You," "Malishona," and "Wings" delve into emotional struggles and the pursuit of personal growth, highlighting both internal and external conflicts. These songs add depth to the narrative, exploring the impact of personal flaws and signaling a turning point where the protagonist decides to overcome their challenges and rise above their setbacks.

Tracks like "Yours," "Electric," "Look In Your Eyes," "Untitled," and "Hold Me" delve into the complexities of relationships, capturing both passion and vulnerability while highlighting the importance of human connection. The high-energy excitement of "Electric" is balanced by a longing for stability and emotional intimacy, showcasing the protagonist reveling in moments of intensity and thrill.

Tracks like "One For The Money," "Look Into Her Eyes," and "Movie" capture both celebratory and introspective moments. These songs represent a triumphant phase of personal achievement, circling back to the earlier themes of ambition. They frame the journey as one worth recounting, adding a reflective and slightly surreal dimension to the protagonist's evolution. "Serenade," "Wewayu," and "Uber Ride" bring the project to a heartfelt close, emphasizing emotional depth, maturity, and balance. These tracks conclude the narrative with an introspective focus on love and the profound role of creativity in achieving personal fulfillment.

Standout moments on the tape also include the expertly curated samples that infuse it with a relaxed neo-soul and R&B vibe. THE iLLUSTRATXR has carved out a distinctive sonic identity that leaves a lasting impact. This uniqueness is further reflected in his expanding repertoire of international collaborations, which align seamlessly with his evolving artistic vision.

OH FLiP TOO makes a notable mark on South Africa’s alt SoundCloud scene. While the space often thrives on experimental risks, THE iLLUSTRATXR strikes a balance with his polished yet daring style, setting a fresh benchmark for excellence. His expanding list of international collaborations signals a rising global influence, all while staying deeply connected to the dynamic and inventive South African music landscape.

In conclusion, OH FLiP TOO stands as a resounding success—an impressive fusion of technical mastery and emotional resonance that solidifies THE iLLUSTRATXR’s status as a trailblazer. This mixtape transcends the typical format; it’s a movement in itself, one that cannot be ignored.

FLYTAPES 2: SCUM BABIE$ Redefine Underground Hip-Hop with Kwaito Grit and Boom Bap Nostalgia

FLYTAPES 2, 2024
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
© FLYSHIT MEDIA HOUSE 2022
Reviewed: 24 November '24

With FLYTAPES 2, SCUM BABIE$ x FLYSHIT (SBXFS) unleash a raw and unapologetic gem that evokes the energy of a cipher in a shadowy alley—gritty, intense, and unapologetically real. Dropped in June 2024, the mixtape showcases the group’s remarkable talent for fusing eras and genres, seamlessly blending the nostalgic edge of '90s boom bap, the ruggedness of kwaito, and bold avant-garde experimentation into a sound that feels both refreshingly innovative and deeply rooted.

The opening track, "FALLING DOWN", pulls listeners into a shadowy abyss with its haunting, lo-fi production and razor-sharp lyricism that lingers long after the first listen. It sets the stage for a mixtape defined by striking contrasts: chaos meets control, dreams clash with despair, and tradition collides with rebellion. Drty-Dnko ’s eerie piano loops and thunderous basslines provide the perfect backdrop for the MCs to craft vivid narratives of urban struggle, systemic corruption, and cultural pride.

The synergy within the collective is undeniably electrifying. Mabonga exudes laid-back charisma, Baba Kushi delivers with unpredictable flows, Ziplock Zee captivates with raw storytelling and Kijana Damu brings a subtle yet deeply impactful lyricism. Together, they create a dynamic mosaic of voices, each distinct yet harmoniously aligned. Tracks like 'GOD’S LAUGHTER', 'IKHUMBI', and 'MICROPHONE KONTROL' are standout examples of their cohesion, showcasing a collective artistry where every member delivers with the urgency and passion of someone with everything to prove.

Still, the mixtape isn’t without its missteps. "IS IT OKAY" feels somewhat out of place, with a high-pitched hook that disrupts the otherwise seamless flow of the project. The production on this track struggles to capture the rugged authenticity that defines much of the mixtape. Additionally, Cory Sosa’s contributions, while brimming with potential, are disappointingly sparse, leaving his talent somewhat underexposed. Similarly, Castro Cable's presence feels underutilized, his abilities not fully showcased amid the group’s dynamic performances.

One of the standout tracks with undeniable crowd appeal is "MASGEBENGU" by Vintxge Kid and Drty-Dnko. This kwaito-meets-boom bap anthem boasts thunderous basslines that lay a solid foundation for captivating even the most discerning hip-hop heads. Both MCs shine brightly, with Vintxge Kid delivering an exceptional performance that highlights his lyrical finesse and masterful cadence.

What’s truly impressive is Vintxge Kid’s evolution since FLYTAPES VOL. 1 in August 2023. On this mixtape, he emerges as a commanding presence within the collective, showcasing remarkable growth. His artistry feels poised for greater heights, and it’s hard to ignore the potential for a breakout solo career—especially since his solo releases remain scarce. With this level of talent and maturity, 'MASGEBENGU' could easily be his ticket to the spotlight.

Despite its flaws, FLYTAPES 2 stands as a powerful testament to the group’s growth and maturity. The production shows significant advancement from their debut, with Drty-Dnko weaving immersive soundscapes that amplify the group’s razor-sharp lyricism. This is music that embraces its imperfections, with the raw grit of the streets seeping into every beat and bar. SCUM BABIE$ x FLYSHIT have delivered more than a mixtape—they’ve crafted an anthem for the unheard, a vivid tapestry of stories that demand attention.

For those who seek music that challenges, provokes, and inspires, FLYTAPES 2 is nothing short of a triumph.

Unveiling the Groove: Microgroove Critique #003

Holding/Evolving, 2024
Genre: Neo-Soul/R&B
OVERALL RATING: 4.3 / 5

Holding/Evolving by Hunter Rose and Maloon theBoom is a sonic sanctuary, intricately woven with the textures of neo-soul, R&B, and jazz, echoing the vibrant depth of a Cape Town sunset. Far from just a set of songs, this EP unfolds as a personal journey—an exploration through the shifting terrains of heartache, healing, and self-discovery. Hunter’s voice, smoldering and warm, casts light over every track, unveiling emotions that linger just beneath the surface, revealing the unspoken with an elegant intensity.

Maloon theBoom’s production complements Rose’s intimate vocals beautifully, embracing a minimalist style that gives every beat and note room to breathe. The subtle grooves, soft keys, and gentle jazz riffs create a sensation of floating—weightless yet grounded in emotion. The opening track, “MORE,” gradually draws listeners into a mesmerizing blend of rich textures and delicate percussion, setting the EP’s emotional foundation.

In tracks like “LOVE,” Rose’s influences truly come to life; her vocal phrasing echoes D’Angelo’s soulful intensity, while her storytelling resonates with the depth of Anita Baker’s jazz-infused R&B. Yet, Rose is unmistakably her own artist, merging vulnerability and self-assuredness in a way that feels both classic and refreshingly original. Each note feels steeped in introspection, as if every song is a page from her personal journal, openly shared with the listener.

The closing track, “GLOW,” beautifully captures the EP’s essence—a bittersweet yet hopeful reflection on the intricacies of personal growth. Rose’s smooth, intimate vocals glide effortlessly over Maloon’s soulful, polished production, merging so flawlessly it’s nearly impossible to discern where one ends and the other begins. With Holding/Evolving, Hunter Rose and Maloon theBoom have crafted a soulful experience that defies genre and time, leaving a lasting impact on the listener. This is a collection to treasure.

IT'S ABOUT TIME, 2024
Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop
OVERALL RATING: 3.7 / 5

It’s About Time is less an album and more an unguarded dive into Hugh Amani’s psyche—a gritty, defiant portrait of his world. In this EP, Amani isn’t here to offer solace; he draws listeners deep into his maze of introspection and hardship, painting a poetic, streetwise picture of life’s tougher edges. With a gravelly voice and sharp lyricism, he delivers each verse with a power that’s both jarring and magnetic.

Amani’s flow is like a finely-honed blade, switching from lightning-fast bars to a slower, almost trance-like cadence that keeps listeners fully engaged. His versatility stands out in tracks like “YOU-WHO (Freestyle),” where he commands an unpredictable beat with rapid rhymes, each line landing with gut-punch impact. The unpredictability of his flow mirrors the tension in his lyrics, capturing a relentless push and pull between ambition and struggle.

The production on It’s About Time crafts a dark, moody atmosphere, mixing trap with boom-bap and haunting ambient layers. Deep basslines throb like a pulse, eerie melodies linger like shadows, and off-kilter rhythms lend an experimental flair that’s both innovative and grounded. Amani’s knack for blending classic hip-hop roots with edgy, avant-garde vibes makes this EP a unique gem in South Africa’s alternative music scene.

Hugh Amani doesn’t simply narrate his story—he crafts it with vivid, powerful strokes, layering it with themes of pain, resilience, and fierce ambition. It’s About Time offers an unfiltered glimpse into reality, urging listeners to face life’s hard truths head-on. This EP isn’t just hip-hop; it’s an immersive experience.

Laws Of The Jungle, 2023
Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop/R&B
OVERALL RATING: 3.9 / 5

In Laws Of Jungle, Sandrahhh weaves a captivating universe that thrums with introspective energy, masterfully balancing fragility and strength in a way that feels both effortless and evocative. Released in October 2023, this EP showcases Sandrahhh as a bold adventurer in both sound and emotion, with her voice serving as both a guiding light and a profound revelation. Hailing from Kenya and raised in Johannesburg, she intricately weaves her cultural heritage into every beat and lyric, crafting a soundscape that is intensely personal yet resonates on a universal level.

Her compositions exemplify a masterful balance of restraint and impact. The minimalistic beats provide a solid foundation, allowing her vocals—smooth, slightly ethereal, and utterly mesmerizing—to shine. In tracks like “BASQUIAT FLOWS,” there’s a cinematic intimacy as her layered harmonies ebb and flow, reflecting themes of self-discovery and resilience. She draws listeners in, with her words slicing through the air like a gentle blade, each line infused with vulnerability and raw honesty. Yet, this minimalism never feels lacking; Sandrahhh enhances each track with intricate instrumental details—ambient synths, throbbing basslines, and delicate guitar riffs—that imbue them with richness and depth.

When she adopts a rap cadence, her voice gains a sharper intensity, demanding attention with assertive, punchy bars. Sandrahhh's lyrical skill truly shines as she intricately weaves wordplay and double entendres into her verses, celebrating themes of resilience, confidence, and independence. Her hooks are irresistibly catchy and anthemic, carrying a quiet power that highlights her remarkable ability to navigate between boldness and subtlety. Laws Of Jungle serves as both a journey and an invitation—a vibrant sonic landscape that leaves a lasting impression and solidifies Sandrahhh’s status as a formidable force in alternative music.

failed experiment, 2024
Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop
OVERALL RATING: 3.8 / 5

With failed experiment, Kenn Kyoto unveils his evolution from a high school dreamer to an emerging talent in South Africa's alternative hip-hop landscape. Released in August 2024, this EP transcends the conventional album format, resembling a raw sonic diary that chronicles the unvarnished experiences of Kenn’s life in recent years. From innocent schoolyard crushes to candid skate park revelations, each track vibrates with a frenetic blend of introspection, rebellion, and a hint of youthful exuberance.

Kenn’s sound is firmly rooted in the underground, merging hip-hop, punk, and a DIY ethos that is both compelling and provocative. The production, largely the handiwork of his longtime friend Maverick and collaborator Soul Rich, resembles an exposed nerve—dark, raw, and intentionally askew. Each track is infused with haunting synths, deep basslines, and gritty lo-fi textures, giving the impression that these songs were birthed in a dimly lit basement at the stroke of midnight. Kenn’s aggressive, off-kilter flow serves as the foundation of the project, deftly oscillating between rapid-fire bars and slower, more reflective moments that pull listeners deep into his narrative.

Standout tracks like “Steven Seagal” and “Villain” showcase Kenn’s lyrical talent, with each line cutting sharply, infused with mind bending lyricism. These songs elevate the EP beyond a mere debut, revealing a young artist discovering his voice while challenging genre boundaries. Though failed experiment may be rough around the edges, that’s precisely what adds to its excitement—it's an unrefined glimpse of an artist who boldly forges his own path through South Africa’s alternative rap scene.

OCRA, 2023
Genre: Alt. R&B/Neo-Soul/ Experimental
OVERALL RATING: 4.1 / 5

With OCRA, Sei Siren invites listeners into a lush, mesmerizing realm where music flows with unrestrained emotion. Released in May 2023, this EP positions Sei Siren as a bold sonic visionary, leading her audience through a maze of desire, freedom, and self-reflection. Each track is an exploration into the unfamiliar, where conventional limits fade away, revealing the purest form of feeling. Sei Siren's sound is a stunning blend of alternative R&B, experimental electronica, and neo-soul, imbued with a global sophistication that fearlessly challenges the norm.

Sei Siren’s production is truly cinematic, crafting intricate soundscapes that shift and sparkle like sunlight filtering through stained glass. In standout tracks like “Knives and Blades” and “Joy Bypass,” she artfully contrasts smooth, ethereal vocals with distorted, fragmented effects, creating an enchanting, otherworldly atmosphere. Each beat and synth line is meticulously crafted, blending ambient silence with complex rhythms and electronic textures, resulting in a sound that feels both futuristic and organic. She expertly manipulates tension and release, making the listening experience as much about the pauses and spaces between sounds as it is about the sounds themselves.

Within her compositions, Sei Siren captures a profound sense of liberation, gracefully navigating the realms of nostalgia and avant-garde experimentation. Her music bridges two worlds: the exhilarating vibe of the dance floor and the quiet introspection of reflective listening. Lyrically, she explores themes of love, unity, and self-expression, embodying a celebratory essence that resonates both personally and universally. This remarkable ability to harmonize contrasting elements lends OCRA a timeless quality, a rare achievement in the contemporary music landscape.

OCRA transcends the typical EP format; it’s an immersive experience, a sonic call to embrace vulnerability and venture into the unknown. In this project, Sei Siren goes beyond performance—she invites listeners into her universe, where music and emotion intertwine effortlessly, creating a lasting impact that lingers long after the final note has dissipated.

Collaborating with artists such as Hurricane Dan Fischer, Lelo April, Jinji, Rvcky, and Kurtx, he creates soundscapes that are both intense and reflective, providing an ideal backdrop for his incisive commentary. One of the standout tracks, “93 Wrist Olympics,” features underground powerhouse Ta Longz and serves as a true battleground, with both emcees engaging in a captivating display of lyrical prowess. It’s akin to witnessing two master artisans honing their craft, pushing each other’s boundaries and exchanging lines with the fervor of classic hip-hop duels.

In every verse, Mabonga’s voice resonates with a sense of urgency that serves as both a rallying cry and a heartfelt lament. His flow is seamless, delivering lines that strike with the force of a hammer while maintaining a precision that suggests careful craftsmanship. This isn’t just rap for the sake of rhythm; it’s rap for transformation, a genre that challenges complacency and underscores the significance of our collective history.

Mabonga isn’t merely performing; he’s taking the lead, urging every listener to join him in this vital movement.
