CRIMSON: A Daring Descent into Experimental Soundscapes – Unveiling the Unconventional Masterpiece!

CRIMSON, 2022
Genre: Experimental/Alternative
Reviewed: 20 October 2023

When I first embarked on this sonic journey, courtesy of the multi-talented African musician named Sergiodeartist, I had no clue that I was about to plunge into an emotional rollercoaster that would leave me breathless yet strangely invigorated. CRIMSON, his latest experimental album which surfaced amidst the chaos of late 2022, is a mesmerizing testament to his artistic prowess and unrelenting determination to challenge the status quo of South Africa's alternative music scene.

From the very first note, the albums smooth, soulful vocals caress your eardrums like a lover's gentle touch. Pairing his evocative voice with a production style that seamlessly interweaves synthesizers, samples, and robotic elements, he constructs a soundscape that is both futuristic and soothing. It is a delicate balance between innovation and familiarity, as he fearlessly embraces diverse genres such as electronic, funk, rock, jazz, and pop, weaving them together into a tapestry that defies categorization.

What strikes me about CRIMSON is its audacious departure from the traditional sounds of South Africa. Sergiodeartist fearlessly ventures into more westernized influences, creating a sonic landscape that is captivatingly unique yet accessible. It is an album that speaks to the universal language of music, transcending boundaries and immersing the listener in a world where time and place cease to exist.

From the moment the album kicks off with a captivating intro, "GNOSIS," where the narrator serenades listeners over guitar chords, one is transported into the immersive world of The CRIMSON Experience. Sergio skillfully draws us into an alternate universe through outstanding spoken word poetry accompanied by broken piano chords, setting the stage for an unparalleled journey unlike any other.

Sergio's production perfectly complements the album's storyline, while his lyrics tap into our psyche and evoke deep, intense emotions. The overarching theme of transformation and exploration is palpable as the album progresses. Each track brings something new to the table, showcasing Sergio's vision and dedication to challenging the status quo.

Standout tracks include the Lia Butler-assisted "ILANGA EBUSIKA," the lead single "HEMLOCK," and the collaboration with Noko Sost, "CIRCLING BACK." These songs demonstrate Sergio's ability to seamlessly blend genres, resulting in a refreshing and captivating listening experience. Additionally, tracks like "CONCRETE CLOUDS" and "VERMILLION" hold immense symbolic significance, adding depth to the overall narrative.

On the, Iminent assisted -  "CONCRETE CLOUDS," the meaning and symbolism can be perceived in more than one sense, firstly, It can represent the feeling of living in a densely populated, environment where buildings and structures dominate the landscape, creating a sense of confinement and alienation. The other sense in it symbolize aspirations or dreams that seem distant, unattainable, or weighed down by the harsh realities of life.

As the album nears its end, on tracks like "ALIZARINE," LAMENTATIONS," and "CIRCLING BACK," Sergio takes on a more soulful jazz approach to weather the storm that CRIMSON brewed. The track, "STELLAR ELEKTRA," serves as a beautiful conclusion, leaving listeners with a sense of rebirth, change, and transformation. Its significance in tying together the entire experience makes it worth reliving again and again.

With a runtime of 54 minutes, CRIMSON offers a substantial and immersive experience for its listeners. This album showcases Sergio's artistic prowess and sets the stage for his sound to be experienced by audiences worldwide.

One cannot overlook the star-studded features that grace this musical odyssey. Artist include Indie Vouge, The Ikuntru, Ukhona and Thando to name a few. Each artist, carefully selected by Sergiodeartist, plays a vital role in building the CRIMSON experience. Their contributions elevate the already intricate tapestry, adding layers of complexity that draw you deeper into the sonic realm Sergiodeartist has crafted.

Furthermore, the album sequencing is nothing short of exquisite. Each track sways the listener swiftly through the storyline of CRIMSON, as if guiding us through the labyrinth of its creator's mind, regardless of it's dissonant, erratic sound to convey its out-of-sync nature. It is an experience that cannot be rushed, a journey that demands your attention and rewards your commitment.

The album's chaotic cinematic feel is purposefully crafted, a deliberate choice to mirror the complexities of life itself. Sergiodeartist fearlessly tackles deep introspective concepts throughout CRIMSON, forcing us to confront our own passions, desires, and vulnerabilities. It is an exploration of love, both tender and tormented, a celebration of vitality and life force that stirs the very essence of our being. Through these tracks, Sergiodeartist reveals an unyielding courage, an inner strength that inspires transformation and growth.

In conclusion, CRIMSON is an album that defies expectations and demands to be felt with every fiber of your being. Sergiodeartist has crafted a courageous sonic masterpiece, pushing the boundaries of alternative music in South Africa, and leaving an indelible mark on the genre. It is a testament to his artistic vision and his unwavering commitment to his craft. So, my friends, I implore you to surrender to the allure of CRIMSON and allow its enchanting embrace to wash over you, for this is a musical experience that will leave you forever changed. REVIEW: TKO's 'What Was Written': A Masterclass in Hip Hop Lyricism and Production Harmony.

What Was Written, 2023
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Reviewed: 14 Oct 2023

In a tumultuous world where we are constantly bombarded with the noise of disposable rhymes and hollow beats, TKO emerges as a shining beacon of authenticity and skill. With his latest effort, "What Was Written," the 22-year-old African emcee takes us on a soul-stirring journey filled with emotional highs and lows, leaving no stone unturned in his quest to redefine the essence of Hip-Hop.

Gone are the days of TKO's laid-back mellow raps that we became accustomed to on his previous project (Typebeats and PipedreamsSource & Something[4rom]Me). With "What Was Written," he embraces a new sound, one that harkens back to the roots of Hip-Hop, reminding us of the power and potential this genre possesses. From the very first track, it becomes evident that TKO means business, as he delivers relentless flows and a strikingly assertive delivery that demands your attention.

But it's not just TKO's newfound ferocity that captivates the listener. His pen game has matured to a level where every syllable feels purposeful and deliberate, weaving intricate narratives and painting vivid pictures with his words. The cohesion between his lyrics and the production is undeniable, with each beat perfectly complementing his lyrical prowess and enhancing the emotional impact of his storytelling.

"What Was Written" is not merely an album; it is a special treat meticulously crafted for South African Hip-Hop heads everywhere. TKO's relativity has reached its pinnacle, enabling him to forge an unshakeable bond with his dedicated listeners. Through introspective verses and deeply personal anecdotes, he effortlessly taps into the hearts and minds of those who have experienced similar hardships and triumphs, creating a connection that is raw, honest, and profoundly moving. It is always a rewarding experience to hear a song that directly relates to oneself or to situations that have already been experienced. On "Corner Boys Special," he included a brief interlude of the usual Kasi Gents (his peers, I assume) conversing about the usual topics (school, unemployment, and the system) around the corner of the hood, which may seem straightforward, but it serves to illustrate the EP's hip hop aesthetic, which is a reflection of the current climate we are in.

The emotional rollercoaster that TKO takes us on is dizzying, as he seamlessly navigates between moments of vulnerability and explosive energy. Tracks like "Cheat Code" delve into the depths of his conscious, exposing TKO's inner empathy and humility with unflinching honesty. Yet, just when you think you've reached the bottom, he gets your head bumping with anthems like "Off Loop," injecting a surge of grit and resilience into your veins.

As the EP reaches its climactic end with the sequel track, "Stove," TKO leaves no doubt that he is a force to be reckoned with. He is an artist who understands the transformative power of music and harnesses it with surgical precision, delivering a project that transcends mere entertainment and resonates deeply within the soul.

"What Was Written" is a testament to the growth and evolution of TKO as an artist, shedding his old skin and embracing a sound that is as refreshing as it is powerful. With this EP, he is on the way to establishing himself as a trailblazer in the Hip-Hop landscape, using his platform to elevate the genre and ignite a flame in the hearts of all who listen.

What Was Written not only pays homage to the iconic Nas album, It Was Written, but also solidifies TKO as a force to be reckoned with in the rap game. This special treat for SA Hip-Hop heads stands as a benchmark in TKO's career, showcasing his evolution and leaving listeners hungry for what's to come.

In a world that often feels devoid of substance, TKO's "What Was Written" is a beacon of hope, reminding us of the indomitable spirit of Hip-Hop and its unparalleled ability to touch our lives in the most profound ways imaginable. It is a masterpiece that demands to be heard, cherished, and celebrated.

REVIEW: Enchanted Melodies and Whispered Secrets: Exploring 'The Swamp Forest Siren' – Sonder the Africanime's Hauntingly Beautiful Soft Rock Folk Fusion

The Swamp Forest Siren, 2023
Genre: Alternative, Soft Rock, Folk
Reviewed: 10 October 2023

In the magical realm of music, where artists cast their lyrics like spells and melodies dance like ethereal spirits, occasionally, a young prodigy emerges from the depths of obscurity, commanding attention with an unexpected opus. Such is the case with Sonder the Africanime and their latest offering, "The Swamp Forest Siren."

At the tender age of 22, this African musician unfurls their wings, taking flight in the realm of alternative soft rock and folk, diverging from their previous works, (Petrichor's Melody & PINK FLOYD IS A GUITAR ) that hinted at a much wilder, untamed sound. A versatile artist with immense talent, Sonder enchants listeners with their soothing and calming compositions, providing a much-needed sense of clarity in a world consumed by chaos.

From the first strum of their guitar chords to the resounding beats of the drums by special guest 2KA, Sonder's musical prowess is undeniable, their choice of collaborators is unprecedented, each feature doing justice to the album. Features include frequent collaborator, Wolffisdead, Mxmnt & 2KA on the Drums. With each note, they delicately weaves together a tapestry of emotions, invoking a range of feelings that stir the soul. Their introspective lyrics, brimming with raw honesty and vulnerability, penetrate deep within, hindering healing while simultaneously serving as a catalyst for introspection, songs like Empty, Figment & Death's Poem capture this beautifully.

However, while Sonder's talent shines brightly, the mission behind "The Swamp Forest Siren" remains somewhat unclear. The album, with its ten tracks, embarks on a tumultuous journey through the artist's innermost thoughts and emotions. But the first half of the album feels dense and disorganized, like a cluttered attic of emotions that yearns for a sense of coherence. It's a precarious balancing act, a seesaw of brilliance and shortcomings.

Undeniably, the production quality of "Swamp Forest Siren" is more matured than their previous projects ("PFIAG" & "Petrichor's Melody"), illustrating growth and evolution as an artist. But in their pursuit of pushing boundaries, Sonder traverses uncharted territories, experimenting with their singing style (on songs, "Agony" & "Just Chill"), causing moments of disharmony that disrupt the overall harmony of the album. It's an audacious move that falls short, failing to add substantial value to the music landscape.

Yet, amidst the highs and lows of this emotional rollercoaster, "The Swamp Forest Siren" retains the power to captivate. The lilting melodies and enchanting aesthetics transport listeners to ethereal realms, where they can momentarily escape the burdens of reality, they effortlessly does this on the song "Blind". Sonder's ethereal voice, laden with vulnerability, remains a golden thread that ties the album together, infusing even the weakest moments with a delicate, haunting charm.

In the final analysis, "The Swamp Forest Siren" emerges as a bittersweet testament to an artist finding their footing, teetering on the precipice of greatness. Sonder the Africanime's immense talent shines through despite the album's flaws, leaving a lasting impact on those willing to delve into its complex depths. As the sun sets on this emotional expedition, one can't help but wonder what lies ahead for this young prodigy whose musical journey has only just begun.
