While progressing through the album, I encountered a blend of emotions towards Fele's songs. Undoubtedly, her songwriting is skillful, yet it fails to make a lasting impact. Despite well-crafted lyrics, they often seem superficial, lacking the depth required for themes like the complexities of romantic relationships. Although one might interpret her songs as symbolic expressions of the lasting and transformative aspects of love, even this perspective falls short of creating a memorable impression.

FELE's artistry is marked by exquisite style and composition, showcasing her exceptional skills as a performer. While drawing inspiration from musical influences, she has crafted a distinctive sound. However, some may argue that her album lacks authenticity in representing her craft. Instead of a cohesive body of work highlighting her artistry, it appears more like a collection of her best experimental songs.

LOVE ARCH disappoints mainly due to its lack of cohesion and thoughtful sequencing in the tracklist. The album gives the impression of being on shuffle, lacking a clear direction or smooth flow between songs. Despite containing only 8 tracks and lasting 28 minutes, it's evident that FELE has the potential to create a more impactful and unified album.  

Highlighted tracks showcasing her exceptional vocal skills include "Bloody & Blue," "Bad for You," "Out," and "SM." "Unkissed Girl" demonstrates her versatility, seamlessly blending Zulu elements in both production and delivery. The cinematic ambiance of "In The Eye" is accentuated by its clean production, beautiful buildup, and lyrical harmony with other elements.

In summary, LOVE ARCH by FELE, while featuring moments of beauty and skill, fails to make a lasting impression. Although there is undeniable talent and potential, the album seems like a missed opportunity to truly showcase her artistry. ZRi seems focused on establishing himself globally rather than reflecting the tumultuous times. Despite offering a distinctive and immersive listening journey akin to stoner beats or trippy sounds, the project falls short in terms of both production and lyrics, lacking the innovation and creativity needed to truly parallel Jean Basquiat. With a conciseness 17-minute runtime, SAMO by ZRi leaves a positive initial impression likely to fade, yet it hints at the artist's potential for future growth and experimentation.

Fentse. could easily join that esteemed list with this track, as Kyabo perfectly complements the atmospheric chemistry. The blend of their sound, delivery, and creativity, along with the overall production quality, is truly impressive.

In the song "WHITE DOVES," a romantic atmosphere is depicted through vivid and symbolic imagery. The mention of "white doves soaring through the sky" symbolizes purity, peace, and love, while the phrase "as we engage in love" suggests a romantic encounter. However, as the album unfolds, the shadows of inconsistency and a potential lack of cohesion loom, raising questions about whether this venture might fall short of the excellence expected by avid Roho enthusiasts.

Roho's follow up project, VESPER is an entry into South African pop music that disappoints more than it captivates. Despite these shortcomings, there are moments on VESPER that shine. The production, while not groundbreaking, is polished and at times, sonically engaging. Roho's vocals are smooth and emotive, carrying the tracks with a certain charisma. Roho's generic songwriting struggles to establish a distinctive voice or innovate within the genre. Despite slightly surpassing average standards, Roho's production lacks uniformity, and the lyrics come across as superficial, falling short of establishing a resonant emotional or personal connection with the listeners.

In the album's opening track, "SAMAEL," Roho delves into profound symbolism by invoking the archangel of death. As a Scorpio, he intertwines his astrological identity with the thematic essence of death and rebirth associated with Scorpios. Through rhythmic chants of the name Samael in the chorus, Roho seems to beckon an internal transformation—a gradual ego dissolution. In his own words, he emphasizes the importance of initiating the project with a symbolic death, only to culminate in a later rebirth, constructing a thematic journey that mirrors the cycles of life and renewal.

In the fourth track, "POP SEX FASHION," Roho reflects on the stark contrast between Johannesburg (JHB) and his familiar home, Pretoria. The themes explored, spanning passion, spiritual exploration, vices, and heartbreak, appear somewhat superficial, lacking the depth required to establish a profound connection with the audience.

With a concise duration of 30 minutes, VESPER attempts a daring and vulnerable exploration to push the boundaries of South African Pop. However, it leans excessively on trends rather than showcasing artistic originality. While there are glimpses of potential, these moments are regrettably eclipsed by the album's overall deficiency in depth and impact.

In conclusion, while VESPER might resonate with die hard Roho enthusiasts, it may not meet the expectations of those looking for a more profound and innovative pop music experience.

When I first embarked on this sonic journey, courtesy of the multi-talented African musician named Sergiodeartist, I had no clue that I was about to plunge into an emotional rollercoaster that would leave me breathless yet strangely invigorated. CRIMSON, his latest experimental album which surfaced amidst the chaos of late 2022, is a mesmerizing testament to his artistic prowess and unrelenting determination to challenge the status quo of South Africa's alternative music scene.

From the very first note, the albums smooth, soulful vocals caress your eardrums like a lover's gentle touch. Pairing his evocative voice with a production style that seamlessly interweaves synthesizers, samples, and robotic elements, he constructs a soundscape that is both futuristic and soothing. It is a delicate balance between innovation and familiarity, as he fearlessly embraces diverse genres such as electronic, funk, rock, jazz, and pop, weaving them together into a tapestry that defies categorization.

What strikes me about CRIMSON is its audacious departure from the traditional sounds of South Africa. Sergiodeartist fearlessly ventures into more westernized influences, creating a sonic landscape that is captivatingly unique yet accessible. It is an album that speaks to the universal language of music, transcending boundaries and immersing the listener in a world where time and place cease to exist.

 

From the moment the album kicks off with a captivating intro, "GNOSIS," where the narrator serenades listeners over guitar chords, one is transported into the immersive world of The CRIMSON Experience.
