RATHER LIE, 2024
Genre: Neo-Soul/Live Acoustic
OVERALL RATING: 3.6 / 5

giuliette price's "RATHER LIE" is an acoustic neo-soul EP recorded live, promising an intimate and captivating musical journey. Released in January 2024, the project features a talented ensemble of musicians, including Joshua Nemaire on bass, Joshua Wheatley on piano, Lebogang Komane on trumpet, Luke van Eeden on drums, and Matthew handling mixing and mastering duties. From the start, it's evident that Price has carefully curated the song selection to showcase her prowess as a performer. The EP immerses listeners in price's world of soulful tranquility and neo-soul vibes. However, despite capturing the essence of price's music, there is a noticeable absence of interaction between the artist and the live audience, which slightly detracts from the overall experience.

Throughout the EP, the applause from the audience feels staged and disconnected from the live experience, undermining the authenticity of the performance. Despite this flaw, price's captivating vocal presence leaves a lasting impression on listeners, evoking feelings of relaxation and serenity. The EP effectively highlights the timbres and nuances of acoustic instruments, allowing price's soulful vocals to take center stage. However, the arrangements on "RATHER LIE" fail to capture the true essence of a live acoustic project, lacking cohesion and depth in the instrumentation and leaving listeners longing for more dynamic and intricately crafted arrangements.

Despite its flaws, the EP contains a standout moment with the track "Gabby," a seven-minute performance showcasing price's vocal mastery. Her emotive delivery and confident stage presence make this song a highlight of the EP, impressing listeners with her exceptional performance skills. In summary, "RATHER LIE" by giuliette price offers a mix of highs and lows. While it effectively captures Price's neo-soul style and features standout vocal performances, it falls short in delivering the full energy and intimacy of a live acoustic performance. Nevertheless, price's undeniable talent shines through, leaving listeners excited to witness her future musical endeavors.
